What's Your Story: Matt Lewis

matt-lewis-thriller-author.jpg

Background
Father of two, writer, fly fisherman and guitarist.

When did you start reading Vince?
From the beginning, with Term Limits. It was actually my Mother who read it first and passed it on to me.

Do you have a favorite book?
Term Limits again. The subject matter was a jolt in the arm to the thriller-writer community. It was something we hadn't seen before.

Who is your favorite character?
Who doesn't pick Mitch Rapp? The character is so great because he says what he wants to say, when he wants to say it! Almost all of us have had a moment when we have wanted to run our mouths, yet we bit our tongues instead. Who can't identify with that!

Who do you envision when you read about Mitch Rapp?
All of the Special Operators that sacrifice so much and ask so little in return.

If you could be a character in a Vince Flynn novel, who would you be?
I'd be Mitch Rapp, no surprise there.  But as long as we are fantasizing, I'd have less regret and a sense of loss. The character of Mitch Rapp has a heavy under-current of both.

Is there anything else you would like to share relating to Vince and his novels?
Vince was a true gentleman and will be missed. Both of his parents read the manuscript for my debut novel Endgame and with their endorsement Vince shared it with those he works with in the publishing community. Never met me, but helped me nonetheless.

What's Your Story: Steffanie Nicole Barger

Background
Ex cop, business owner, chemical sales rep, mom and writer!

Why did you start reading Vince?
On the beach, then all night. Read American Assassin in 4 days.

Do you have a favorite book?
Kill Shot. You learn why Mitch Rapp is Mitch Rapp. You fight along side him and hope he survives the suspenseful twists and turns!

Who is your favorite character?
Mitch Rapp's conversations with the bad guys!...and Thomas Stansfield's cunning ways for all the right reasons and of course Stan Hurley's attitude and Irene Kennedy's inner strength.

Who do you envision when you read about Mitch Rapp?
I think of men like Chris Kyle and how they have families and fight for our freedoms and we truly never know what they go through.

If you could be a character in a Vince Flynn novel, who would you be?
I am definitely vicariously Mitch Rapp. My true personality is quite the opposite though. I would say Mitch is an INTJ. I am an ENFP.

Is there anything else you would like to share relating to Vince and his novels?
There's nothing like getting into the head of an assassin with a huge heart buried deep inside.

What's Your Story: Tim Hagan

TIM-HAGAN.jpg

Background
Former Marine and international mobility specialist. I travel a lot and always need a good book on the road.

Why did you start reading Vince?
On one of my trips I finished the book I was reading and was looking for another book to hold me over until I got home. Saw Vince's book "Kill Shot" in one of the airport book stores, read the back cover and knew it was right up my alley! Mitch Rapp became my next favorite protagonist, besides Jack Reacher, and I was hooked. Proceeded to fly through all of the Rapp books and was incredibly sad when I heard that Vince got away from us.

Do you have a favorite book?
A very hard question, but I would have to say "Kill Shot" because it got me hooked on Mitch Rapp. I just couldn't wait to get the next book.  I got online and wrote down all the books so I could then start reading them in sequence.

Who is your favorite character?
Hands down it has to be Mitch Rapp. However, you have to like Scott Coleman as well.

Who do you envision when you read about Mitch Rapp?
Being a former Marine I envision myself working in a support role with a guy like Mitch. Sort of like Scott Coleman.

Is there anything else you would like to share relating to Vince and his novels?
When you travel a lot your best friend is often times a good book. There is a lot of down time with delayed flights, the flight itself, hotel time, etc. Having one of Vince's books in hand made that travel so exciting. Time would fly by. I would get 3/4's through the book and start to feel down because I didn't want the book to end. That's when you know you are hooked on an author, when you don't want the book to end, and you can't wait for the next one to come out!

What's Your Story: Terry Hayes

terry-hayes.jpg

Background
I am a former journalist and foreign correspondent who, through a very fortunate set of circumstances, got the opportunity to work as a screenwriter and film producer. A person who I didn't know - a medical doctor - was looking for someone to collaborate with him on writing a movie. A mutual acquaintance mentioned my name and the doctor came into an office where I was producing a top- rating current affairs radio program and we had a chat about journalism and movies. What we were really trying to do was work out if we could work together.  We both seemed to think it was worth a shot and we ended up going on a long journey together. The doctor's name was George Miller, he went one to be nominated for several Oscars and won one. The first movie we did together was called Road Warrior/Mad Max 2 and a whole lot of of other movies and mini series followed. As I mentioned, it was a very fortunate set of circumstances! I have continued to write movies but my greatest joy has been to work as a novelist. My first book, I Am Pilgrim, is about to be published in the US.

Why did you start reading Vince?
I love browsing in bookshops and surfing the net. I remember walking into
a ookstore, picking up a Vince Flynn book - it was Consent to Kill - reading
the first few pages and then promptly buying it. I guess that was 2005 or
so. My kids are always saying I'm losing my memory (to say nothing of my
mind), so it might have been a little later.

Do you have a favorite book?
My own favorite is American Assassin - primarily because it is a sort of
origin story and I always seem to have a weakness for those. I loved going
back and meeting Mitch Rapp at a much earlier part of his life and it's always
terrific to read about those things - big and small - that contributed to him
becoming the man we know.

Who is your favorite character?
Well, I'd like to be original - and I have really tried to make a case for Irene Kennedy - but I'm afraid I just can't go past Mitch. I think we should all be so lucky to know - let alone create! - a guy like him. I think, as we get older especially, we become more and more disillusioned with politicians no matter what party they represent. Mitch's attitude to them certainly struck a chord with me.

Who do you envision when you read about Mitch Rapp?
Having worked so long in the movies, I always think in terms of casting so forgive me if I go down that route. If you were going a bit older, I think of Russell Crowe - there is something very contained and powerful about him. You get the sense he is very much his own man - just think of him in Gladiator. Younger, and a guy who seems to have a very big career in front of him, is Chris Hemsworth. There is a real presence and like-ability to him - with or without that big hammer. My wife says Russell, my tween age daughters say Chris - and that pretty well sums up the age thing! Of course, they are both Australians (which is where I was raised) so maybe I am a bit biased. In order to counteract that, I think Matt Damon could play it really well and he's such a good actor I can't help envisioning him in many, many things I read.

Is there anything else you would like to share relating to Vince and his novels?
Everyone should read these books!

What's Your Story: David Tromblay

I am a honor grad from a military school, have done extensive security work, Train in Krav Maga and h2h combat... I fit the profile of Mitch Rapp and wish someone would find me to do a casting call.

Why did you start reading Vince?
3 years ago and I was hooked.

Do you have a favorite book?
American Assassin and Consent To Kill.    They are all so full of depth its hard to like one more than the other.

Who is your favorite character?
Mitch.  Enough said.

Who do you envision when you read about Mitch Rapp?
Me.  Mitch reminds me of myself. We think alike, and we both have a will that cannot be broken. Plus, I am a loner with a broken heart..lol.

Is there anything else you would like to share relating to Vince and his novels?
Everyone should read these books!

I'm a freelance writer and also a media relations consultant - I also worked overseas in London for many years, sometimes on events with the U.S. Embassy. My company had people speaking like Margaret Thatcher and Caspar Weinberger at luncheon events.

Why did you start reading Vince?
Around 5 years ago - I was not really into thrillers but thought, "hey, I'll give this a try." I was hooked!

Do you have a favorite book?
"Transfer of Power" - it had everything, from the White House inner secrets to a romance - amazing!

Who is your favorite character?
Yes, Mitch - because he is so brave about what is right and wrong, and not
afraid to tell it how it is.

Who do you envision when you read about Mitch Rapp?
Actually, Vince himself! But I think Chris Hemsworth is a good match too.

If you could be a character in a Vince Flynn novel, who would you be?
I would be Greta, his girlfriend in the prequels, what a lucky girl!!

Is there anything else you would like to share relating to Vince and his novels?
Yes - just reading about Vince, the way he conducted himself when he found he had cancer and learning more about him has been such an inspiration to me through some tough times (job loss, relatives passing away). Also I admire his writing and was inspired how he got his first book out there to the public.

What's Your Story: Gay M.

gay.jpg

Background
I am a retired educator who taught social studies and have always been interested in history, government and world affairs.

Why did you start reading Vince?
Two years ago I lost my 54 year old sister to liver cancer. I live 21/2 hours away from the rest of my family. Because I had retired, I was able to drive back and forth to help with doctor appointments, chemo and radiation. Once my sister came under hospice care, my visits became more and more frequent. I had long been a fan of both Vince and Mitch. During the drives I began getting books on CDs to help occupy my mind and keep my emotions under control. Mitch's own battle plus his immense talent in hooking you as a reader and reeling you into Mitch's world helped me keep my sanity. Six months after my sister died, my mother passed away very suddenly. I retreated back into my books. Then, I learned of Vince's death - my hero, my rock. So, within a period of one year, I lost my "sheroes" and my hero.

Do you have a favorite book?
Well, that's like picking your favorite child. Perhaps Consent to Kill. I think perhaps I bonded a little more with Mitch after the death of his wife. His pain was very real.

Who is your favorite character?
Of course I love Mitch and Irene kicks butt but there is just something about Stan Hurley. I just loved the way he played mind games with his captors while they tortured him - you begin to see his motives for the methods of training he uses.

Who do you envision when you read about Mitch Rapp?
I have my own vision that doesn't immediately bring to mind a current actor. I would almost rather see someone of little fame but great talent take this role much the way Matt Damon made Bourne. Just please no Tom Cruise!

If you could be a character in a Vince Flynn novel, who would you be?
I love Marcus Dumond and I don't like pain and danger. So, perhaps the computer geek who gets to be the fly on the wall for all the nitty gritty.

Is there anything else you would like to share relating to Vince and his novels?
I love, love, loved watching Vince speak (on You Tube) to a group I think in the Southwest. He was just so real. His stories about meeting GW Bush and the real Secret Service and CIA agents are priceless. I signed up to work the 1996 Olympics in ATL with security and got to work with every level of law enforcement including the Secret Service. I see Vince's admiration. They are real people but in a split second they can have a red dot on your head. I learned a lot from being around them. Would have loved to spend time with Vince, pick his brain. True talent He is missed.

What's Your Story: Laurel Iverson

Background
A few years ago, at my 25th high school reunion, I ran into Erin, the gal who was my best buddy in late-elementary/early-middle-school. Having been thinking about old classmates, I asked her, "Whatever happened to your old neighbor [and our classmate] Vinnie?"  She -- knowing my sense of humor -- thought I was being facetious and replied with a smile, "Yah, whatever did happen to him?

Vince became quite the New York Times best selling author, didn't he?"  I was a little confused at first, then questioned, "Vince?  You mean Vince Flynn?  Vinnie is THAT Vince Flynn?"  I used to bicycle by Vince Flynn's house on the way to visit my friend.

Why did you start reading Vince?
I had noticed the books before the reunion, but took instant interest in them once I realized that Vince was one of my childhood classmates.

Do you have a favorite book?
Transfer of Power: It seemed to give a very real, human face to what it was like to be a hostage and hoping against hope that someone like Mitch was out there trying to rescue you.

Who is your favorite character?
Probably Irene Kennedy.  Not only is she a successful woman in a man's world, but she is a true friend to Mitch, helping him keep things in perspective.

Who do you envision when you read about Mitch Rapp?
Probably Harrison Ford in the screen version of Jack Ryan, not because of the different character or different author, but because both characters have had it up to *here* with bureaucracy and the bull that comes with it.

If you could be a character in a Vince Flynn novel, who would you be?
No question -- Irene Kennedy.  She struggles with being a working mother, finds balance in what she does, and still has time for friends like Mitch Rapp.

Is there anything else you would like to share relating to Vince and his novels?
His death is all too real since I am the same age and knew him as a child.  Nor only has his life been cut short, cut so has his talent.

What's Your Story: Gary Nash

gary-nash.jpg

Background
Former Marine infantry officer.

When did you start reading Vince?
2003.

Do you have a favorite book?
Executive Power--because that was my introduction to Vince Flynn.  I quickly purchased the first four, and I've been hooked ever since.

Who is your favorite character?
Mike Nash (Vince wrote in my copy of his book "to Mike's brother, Gary" at a book signing.

Who do you envision when you read about Mitch Rapp?
A compilation of several Marines I've known through the years.

If you could be a character in a Vince Flynn novel, who would you be?
Stan Hurley, because for him pain is weakness leaving the body.  Pain is good!

Is there anything else you would like to share relating to Vince and his novels?
The lines were long at the St. Louis Park Costco. When we were finally face-to-face with Vince, I "requested" that he never again write "ex-Marine".  He promised and then signed our 3 books. Several minutes, and several book signings later, we realized that I forgot to give him the USMC bumper sticker I carried.  We stood off to the side and after another signing, Vince looked up and said, "What can I do for you, Gary?"  He remembered my name!  We were overwhelmed!
I have all 14 of Vince's books, 3 signed and 10 other signed with a personal message.  Only The Last Man is unsigned--how ironic!

Semper fidelis, Vince.  You who wanted to be a Marine, now know that "the streets of heaven are guarded by United States Marines" (from the 2nd verse of the Marine Hymn).

What's Your Story: Pamela S.

Background
I'm a veteran of the U S Air Force and now work for the federal government. I've been a reader all my life. Everything from true crime to love stories. No westerns or science fiction; unless its Star Trek inspired!

Why did you start reading Vince?
I was going to the salon for a hair appointment and didn't have anything to read. The supermarket next door had a display of Flynn's books in a special section. I picked up Term Limits and was hooked after the first chapter! When I left the salon, I went back to the market and picked up the other five books on display! The next day I was at Borders picking up the available hardbacks and have eagerly awaited the new releases ever since!

Do you have a favorite book?
Consent to Kill. With all the killing he had to do...yes he had to, in the end he still didn't lose his humanity. I always knew it was there by how passionate he was about his "business", but you really got to see it this time.

Who is your favorite character?
It has to be Irene Kennedy!! She has peeped Rapp's hole! She know him...when to reel him in and when to let him loose. She does all that..not an easy task AND mothers Tommy like a new born cub!!

Who do you envision when you read about Mitch Rapp?
Gerard Butler!! I think he can display Mitch's ruthlessness & humanity. He's not bad to look at either.

If you could be a character in a Vince Flynn novel, who would you be?
Irene Kennedy. As previously stated that woman has it going on and she intends to keep it that way.

Is there anything else you would like to share relating to Vince and his novels?
All of the novels had me on the edge,of my seat. What makes them so exciting to me is I know some of that is really happening!

What's Your Story: Jonathan L.

Background
I am 18 years old and I have battled Bipolar and some learning disabilities for most of my life. I just graduated from high school in Birmingham, Alabama, and am planning on going to college in the fall.

Why did you start reading Vince?
I started listening to the series on audible format about 2-2 1/2 years ago at my dad's suggestion. From the moment I started hearing George Guidall's voice reading American Assassin, I was hooked.

Do you have a favorite book?
Memorial Day most definitely. The suspense and all around awesomeness
of the novel takes it all the way to the top of my "favorite books list."

Who is your favorite character?
Thomas Stansfield is my favorite character. His ingenious plans and overall cool nature portrayed in the books is pretty inspiring.

Who do you envision when you read about Mitch Rapp?
I'm not too much into actors and people in general, so I really don't know. I usually make up images of the characters in my mind.

If you could be a character in a Vince Flynn novel, who would you be?
I probably would be Stan Hurley, because he is the very opposite of me. He doesn't care who he offends, and does pretty much whatever he wants.

Is there anything else you would like to share relating to Vince and his novels?
The Mitch Rapp series in general helped me get through my times of depression. The whole audio format helped me overcome my reading disabilities and enjoy the books. I need to thank Mr. Vince for helping me through my depression. I probably would have committed suicide if I didn't have the audio books. I re-listen to the books all the time. I listen to these books for hours at a time, and once i just sat all day snacking and listening to Mitch be a bad ass.

What's Your Story: Alan Lee

fan-profile-alan-lee-home.jpg

Background:
With over 30 years of journalistic experience, I anchor the morning news for Fox in Detroit. A Purdue University grad, I also played semi-pro baseball in St. Thomas, USVI. A rabid sports fan, my journalistic career began in sports before switching over to news. My debut espionage thriller, SANDSTORM comes out June 4th.

Why did you start reading Vince?
I caught up with Mitch Rapp in Executive Power.

Do you have a favorite book?
Consent To Kill is my favorite. A contract on Rapp's head! The nerve! Plus I
had the pleasure of hosting Vince as he conducted a book signing at Borders
Books (remember them) in Novi, Michigan.

Who is your favorite character?
The big guy himself, Mitch Rapp is my favorite. No question kicking evil butt without remorse is an admirable trait.

Who do you envision when you read about Mitch Rapp?
Well, Vince told me who he thought would be perfect for the role so he planted that seed in my head and I'm not going to go against his vision.

If you could be a character in a Vince Flynn novel, who would you be?
I'd be any character on his good side.

Is there anything else you would like to share relating to Vince and his novels?
On a personal level, I can't thank Vince enough for his friendship. While he was dealing with his severe medical condition, he took the time -- while recovering -- to read my manuscript. What resulted was a fantastic blurb from Vince for my debut novel SANDSTORM and a lot of encouragement to go along with it. He truly is one hell of a guy.

What's Your Story: Eddie Bane

eddie-bane-fan-profile-header.jpg

Background
Eddie Bane is a former pitcher and first-round draft pick of the Minnesota Twins. Bane played for the Twins from 1973-1977. He has served numerous roles in professional baseball and is currently the special assistant to the GM for the Boston Red Sox.

Why did you start reading Vince?
I am avid reader, and probably started reading Vince around 2005.  What appealed to me immediately was the way Mitch Rapp treated politicians.   I love the political confrontations with the know-it-all political types.  I also like the way Vince is able to portray Mitch’s humanistic side.

I try to labor through the books and read slowly, in part to make them last longer, but also to take-in some of the information. There is a lot to learn from Vince’s books, from where things are located to pecking orders.  I know a couple baseball scouts that were SEALs and I drill them every time I am around them about the information in Vince’s books.

Do you have a favorite book?
Probably The Third Option.  I love all of the books though.  Vince could write a coloring book and I would read it.

I have read all of his books two-to-three times.  Whenever a new book comes out the only thing that stops me from reading is baseball, and maybe a little sleep.  The books are more than just page turners, you really put yourself in the world of the characters.

Who is your favorite character?
Mitch.  We did a bracket of toughest fictional characters and my final two were Rapp and W.E.B. Griffin’s Ken McCoy.  Of course, Mitch won.

Who do you envision when you read about Mitch Rapp?
I always envision one of the baddest guys there is; there is just something about him.  Brown hair, eyes that do not tell anything and an average build.  There is an understated strength and intelligence though.  I come across guys like that in my business, they look just like average “joes,” but then you find out they were SEAL team members.

If you could be a character in a Vince Flynn novel, who would you be?
Scott Coleman.  He is the only person, other than maybe Irene, that might be able to keep a leash on Rapp.  Although, I do not think it would work.

What is your life like as the special assistant to the GM for the Red Sox?
I follow players for the draft, the trading deadline and the international market.   My job is basically to be ready when Ben Cherington (Red Sox GM) needs something.  Like when John Lackey (All-Star pitcher) got injured, I immediately had to go and watch a few guys to see if they might be a fit for our team.

It’s hard for people to fathom what the Red Sox mean to Boston.  I literally get calls from people asking me if I can get them close enough so they can just touch the players.  There really is a special relationship between the team and Boston. Especially, with what happened last week.

Where you in Boston during the week of the Marathon?
I was traveling, but you know, when you see what went on in Boston, you realize that Vince really has his finger on the pulse of what is going on.  It also makes you wonder who are the real Rapps that are out there and how far they have to stay under the radar?

The Red Sox are currently first in the AL East, care to make any predictions for the year?
Ben did a great job putting together a team of good character players and really trying to give John Farrell (Red Sox manager) players that care about winning.  Plus, there are carry over guys who have that mindset, like David Ortiz and Dustin Pedroia.  We are better than people thought we would be, but we knew we were going to have a pretty good team.  Hopefully we can keep it up.

What's Your Story: Bob Mitchell

bob-mitchell.jpg

Background:
I am from Southern Illinois.  I was a three-sport letterman in high school, played college football and a season of semi-pro baseball.  I worked as a television anchor/reporter for about 12 years before joining the Army as a broadcast journalist.  I have been deployed to Iraq, Guantanamo Bay and Central America.  I have also been stationed in Germany and Turkey in addition to tours at several CONUS bases.  I will retire from the Army in November 2013.

When did you start reading Vince?
After getting stationed in California in 2011, my commander suggested reading Vince Flynn books.  After about 10 pages of Pursuit of Honor I was hooked and read all of the Mitch Rapp books within about a year.

Which one of Vince's books is your favorite and why?
I love them all, but Pursuit of Honor was my first, which is not unlike my first girlfriend; I always remember both with great fondness.

Do you have a favorite character and why?
Mitch Rapp is my favorite character by far.  The way he gets the bad guys gets me fired up.

Who do you envision when you read of Mitch and why?
The kind of guy I admire.  He stands for decency and honor.  He is the kind of guy I would want as a close friend.  I also love the way he has no tolerance for Political Correctness or politicians.

If you could be a character in a Vince Flynn novel, what would you be?
Mitch Rapp without a doubt.  He is the kind of guy I would want to be if I had his job.

Is there anything else you would like to share relating to Vince and his novels?
Please don't stop writing them.  I often re-read Vince's novels while waiting for the next one to come out.

What's Your Story: Dr. Vincent Flynn

dr-vince-flynn.jpg

Background:
I am an Urologist in San Diego, CA.

When did you start reading Vince?
In about 2002, I noticed someone by my same name had a book published. I started reading them and am now hooked.

Which one of Vince's books is your favorite and why?
American Assassin.  It is Mitch Rapp at his best.

Do you have a favorite character and why?
Mitch Rapp , because he takes no advice and needs none.

Who do you envision when you read of Mitch and why?
The ultimate American patriot/hero. Even with John Wayne.

If you could be a character in a Vince Flynn novel, what would you be?
Any doctor who patches up Mitch Rapp.

Is there anything else you would like to share relating to Vince and his novels?
Timely and accurate, catches the attention of even the Brass and those being written about.

What's Your Story: Vince Papale

Vince-Papale.jpg

Background
1976 was a time when Philadelphia fans were buried in 11 years of defeat, when Americans were battling the lingering effects of Watergate, the Vietnam War and a sweeping energy crisis. People needed a champion from their ranks, and a local schoolteacher answered their call. Vince Papale did the unthinkable and took on an insurmountable challenge…making the Philadelphia Eagles.

The 30-year old schoolteacher, who did not play football in  college, not only transformed himself into an NFL football play, but he was voted by his teammates captain of the special teams. He has since been selected by the fans as the best special teamer in the Eagles 75-year history. So incredible is his journey that Disney felt compelled to tell his story in the major-motion picture, “Invincible,” released in 2006.

Why did you start reading Vince?
I travel a lot for speaking engagements and I always have a book in hand; I am really into action novels. Maybe two or three years ago, at bookstore in an airport, I saw a book jacket for a political thriller, written by a guy named Vince that looked athletic in his photo. So, I picked it up. That is how my brain works. I guess that’s what happens when you take too many hits to the head.

Mitch Rapp jumped right out at me.

I often think about what I would have done, almost as if what if I had another life, rather than teaching and football. I had thought about entering the Marines Corps or the Air Force after graduating from St Joseph’s University. I have always been very interested in espionage, Black Ops, Delta and the Navy SEALs.

I meet a lot of those guys when I am speaking, and they make me think of Mitch Rapp, who is my favorite fictional character.

Plus, my daughter goes to Syracuse, and they have a tribute to the victims of the Lockerbie bombing.  I know in American Assassin Mitch’s girlfriend is portrayed as one of the victims.
All of these things combined, sometimes I can’t help but think Mitch Rapp is a real person.

Do you have a favorite book?
American Assassin.

I related to Mitch, coming out of college as a lacrosse star trying to make the CIA, just like I came out of college a track star and was trying to realize my dream of making the NFL.

Plus, Hurley reminded me of Dick Vermeil, who would break down guys down to decide who he was going to keep for the team and then he would build them back up. When the Eagles made the Super Bowl, a few years after he became coach, he had 12 guys left from the team he inherited and he called them the Dirty Dozen. When I read about Hurley it is Vermeil with a bit less sophistication, but that same drive.

Who do you envision when you read about Mitch Rapp?
I do see myself. We were two guys on a mission. Mitch was trying to make CIA with an advocate in Irene Kennedy and an apparent adversary that would become an advocate in Hurley.

When I tried out for the Eagles, I had advocates in my father and high-school football coach, George Corner, and there was Dick Vermeil, who I thought at first was an adversary,  but who, in reality, was my advocate that was trying to drive me to the next level.

I also see Mark Wahlberg when I read about Mitch Rapp. I was with him last week and I told him he should audition for the part for American Assassin.

If you could be a character in a Vince Flynn novel, who would you be?
Definitely Mitch Rapp. Although, in The Last Man, I was a little freaked. It seems like he has aged so quickly and he has hardened. I liked it though. He has seen a lot, maybe too much. You see that happen in real life.

Who do you want to win the Superbowl?
I was hoping for the Patriots. I am a New England Patriots fan to the max. I am such a fan of # 83 Wes Welker, Gronkowski and Tom Brady. I love the Patriots. So, if the Eagles are not in it, I root for the Patriots.

What are you up to?
I was diagnosed with Stage I colon cancer around Memorial Day 2011. I had successful surgery, but March is National Colon Cancer month, and I will be attending conferences and participating in public service announcements.

I have a book out that I co-wrote with my wife Janet called, “Be Invincible... A Playbook For Reaching Your Full Potential”  aimed at helping readers reach their full potential. We all have things we have to overcome and decisions that were game changers. In a way, it is like “Chicken Soup For The Soul,” where there are stories of people that overcome incredible things. With each story, we provide an action plan for reaching your potential. Janet, who although she was portrayed as a bartender in the movie, was a world-class gymnast and is now a very successful realtor, entrepreneur, and she runs the Invincible show around here.

We will be publishing a “Born To Be Invincible” book targeted towards teens and young adults, with a similar structure as our previous book where we have role models and solutions, but geared towards topics ranging from bullying to nutrition.

We are in the creation stage of a new cable-weekly show called, “Born To Be Invincible.” Each week, I feature guests who have achieved the unthinkable and experienced what we call an “Invincible Moment.”

Plus, I am a tier 1 speaker and am presenting across the country, mostly to Fortune 500 audiences, but I really enjoy speaking at colleges and high schools as well.

I am also working on a PBS special, but I cannot give too many details on that.

Really, I am just trying to be a good dad and a husband. I have a teenage son, Vinny, who is a really good football player and wants to head to Stanford. He made an all-star team and came home with his jersey and it was my number, 83. I was getting all misty eyed so he busted my chops and he told me he chose the number because of Wes Welker.

I have a daughter, Gabriella, that is cheerleading at Syracuse and she wants to get into broadcasting.

Janet and I have been married for 19 years, and will celebrate our 20th anniversary in August.

I call my family, my “why.” They are the reason why I do things and how I do things. They are my #1 motivation and we like to think that together we are an Invincible Team!

What's Your Story: Nick Searcy

Justified-Promo-Saison4-Art-Mullen.jpg

Background
Nick currently portrays Chief Deputy United States Marshal Art Mullen on FX's Justified, which Vince featured in the April 2012 edition of What’s Vince Watching?  His film credits include Fried Green Tomatoes, Nell, The Fugitive, Cast Away, Head of State, Runaway Jury, The Ugly Truth and Moneyball.

What did you think when you saw Vince recommend Justified to his fans?
It was exciting.  It’s exciting when you’re a fan of someone who is also a fan of the show.

A number of fans have thanked Vince for turning them on to Justified.  Do you have any insights on Season 4 for them?
Not that I could say.  They call us in about two months before the season starts and we have a long conversation with the writers about our characters and where the show could go.  We may get around to exploring my character more this season.

When did you know Justified was going to be a success?
I knew it would be a good show, because there were a lot good people that were involved.  After we did the pilot though, I thought it was going to be a hit.  It just had too many good elements.  Plus, any show that makes me the centerpiece will be a hit.

What type of books do you tend read?
I used to read a lot more books when I was younger, now it is more news.  I tend to read a lot of non-fiction, except for Vince.

Why did you start reading Vince?
A friend turned me onto Vince about six years ago, and ever since then Amazon has me on speed dial and I get the books the day they come out and start reading.

What was the first of Vince’s books that you read?
Consent To Kill.

Do you have a favorite book or character?
American Assassin.  I thought it was great, going back and getting the history of the Mitch Rapp.  It really deepened the character.  I really like every one of the books.  The characters are well written, the plot is interesting and the endings are satisfying.

Who do you envision as Mitch Rapp when you read Vince’s novels?
I guess I always envision myself.  I think everyone tends to put themselves in the role of the protagonist.  Although, I don’t see myself doing all of that running.  Because Vince’s picture is on all of his books, I also envision him as Rapp.

If you could be a character in a Vince Flynn novel, who would you be?
Stansfield.

Who do you think should play Mitch Rapp in the movie?
My friends and I have chewed on that quite a bit, and to be honest we have not come up with anyone.  Mitch is a bit of a throwback, and he needs a Steve McQueen type of actor.

What's Your Story: Kate Spangler

I'm a Chicago native, but recently moved to Richmond VA with my husband. I have a background in biology (specifically in Molecular Weed Science), but currently work as a housewife and I love it! I enjoy running, gardening and the outdoors.

Why did you start reading Vince?
I was on vacation with my boyfriend (who is now my husband) and his family in Aruba. His dad was reading Vince Flynn and brought along some extra books for the rest of us to read. I'm not usually a big reader, but I was immediately drawn in to American Assassin! I couldn't put it down!

Do you have a favorite book?
I really enjoyed American Assassin because it helped me relate to Mitch Rapp and think of him as a normal person, not just a trained killer.

Do you have a favorite character and why?
Mitch is without a doubt my favorite! He is so smart and skilled at everything he does! He reminds me of my husband, however my husband is just a boring Emergency Room Physician-not an assassin! :-)

Who do you envision when you read about Mitch Rapp?
Maybe this is silly, but I envision my husband as Mitch Rapp! :-)

If you could be a character in a Vince Flynn novel, who would you be?
I would definitely want to be Greta because she's not only beautiful, but she's kind of knows how to kick butt too!

Is there anything else you would like to share relating to Vince and his novels?
My husband and I recently went on a relaxing honeymoon in Cancun and brought along some of Vince's books. The only night we stayed up past 10pm was when we were up until midnight finishing our books! (The picture attached is of me reading Kill Shot on the beach in Cancun!)

What's Your Story: Rick Barry

Rick Barry is a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, he was named to the NBA’s 50 Greatest Players list, and he is the only player in the history of the game to lead the NCAA, ABA and NBA in scoring for an individual season.

Why did you start reading Vince?
I started reading him several years ago, when someone told me I should be reading him.

Do you have a favorite book?
I love all of Vince’s books. Mitch Rapp is one of the greatest characters of all time and I just pray they start making the movies soon.

What book would you recommend to friends?
Every one of them.  They should start with American Assassin first and read each and every one.

Who do you envision when you read about Mitch Rapp?
I envision myself.  I can’t stand bad people, and the fact the he goes out and kicks ass; I love it.

If you could be a character in a Vince Flynn novel, who would you be?
I would want to be a guy Mitch respected.  Someone he would come to for advice, and if he needed help, I would go along with him on assignments.

What’s your favorite aspect of Vince’s novels?
The other characters in the book are really cool, Stansfield and Kennedy; just exceptionally well developed.  It is fun to see how they have evolved.  Plus, the twists and turns in the stories are good; it is not all the same thing.  They are exciting books that you just can’t put down.

What’s next for you?
I am involved with a number of business ventures.  I am getting ready to launch a website and a blog about the basketball and the NBA.  Plus, I put together fishing trips to Alaska, where I know some of the best lodges.

What's Your Story: Brad Taylor

Background:
Brad Taylor, Lieutenant Colonel (ret.), is a twenty-one-year veteran of the U.S. Army Infantry and Special Forces, including eight years in 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment - Delta. He is the author of the NY Times bestsellers One Rough Man and All Necessary Force. He lives in Charleston, SC with his wife and two daughters. For more information visit him online at www.bradtaylorbooks.com.

With your military career, do you incorporate actual events you experienced into your writing?
I shy away from including anything that has actually occurred to me, because most of that is classified. Having said that, it's impossible not to refer to things I've done or seen. It's the same as someone writing a scene in a grocery store. How would he or she do that? They'd think of a grocery store they had been in before and build the scene from there. It's the same with me. When constructing a scene, I use the knowledge I have. This leads directly to the next question, precisely because I do have a healthy appreciation for how the intelligence and military systems accomplish their missions, and sometimes this is classified. The last thing I want to do is give the enemy an edge, fiction or otherwise, so I do find myself studying a scene to make sure I haven't said anything I shouldn't. Sometimes I paint myself into a corner whereby I find that what I've written is inappropriate to describe to fans" simply because it's classified, and I'll go back and rewrite.

Why did you start reading Vince/What was the book?
I was given the book Term Limits by a guy on my SF operational detachment while I was serving on Okinawa. Sorry to say it didn't give Vince any money, but that's when I began reading him.

Do you have a favorite book or character?
Obviously, it would be Mitch Rapp. Who wants to read about some milquetoast?

Who do you envision when you read about Mitch Rapp?
No one. I let the author create the character, using what he envisioned. Certainly not me. Mitch Rapp can run a six minute pace for days, and has the call sign Iron Man. Definitely not me.

If you could be a character in a Vince Flynn novel, what would you be?
Ten years ago, it would have been Mitch Rapp, but that's pretty much been beat out of me. Now, probably Thomas Stansfield or a male Irene Kennedy. I'd want to be the one pulling the strings, the guy controlling the Orion team.

As a writer in the political thriller genre, what makes Vince’s books compelling to you?
Probably wish fulfillment. In reality, it's very, very hard to get missions accomplished, with a plethora of wickets to jump through. Make no mistake, the wickets are there for a reason, but it's nice to read about a guy that can be turned loose without any of the usual roadblocks. It's the same reason I write the series that I do, a sort of "if only they'd let this happen....". Having seen what I have, I wouldn't want Orion Team - or my own Taskforce - to exist in the real world, but it's fun to read about in fiction. More than that, though, it's because Vince gets it right on all of the little details. Nothing makes me put a book down faster than a guy shooting a .51 caliber sniper rifle or visiting the DCI on the fourth floor of the CIA.

What are you working on currently?
I just finished Enemy of Mine, the third book in the Pike Logan series, which will be out in January of 2013, and I'm currently pounding away on Book IV.
