Chapter 1:  Jalalabad, Afghanistan
The four dead men were lined up on the living room floor of the safe house. Mitch Rapp started with the one on the left. The bearded face, the dark, lifeless eyes, and the dime-sized bullet hole thatmarked the center of the man’s forehead were all expected.

A Note From Kyle Mills
Tuesday, July 01, 2014

Before I start the introductions, I want to thank Vince’s readers, friends, and relatives for all the wonderful emails.  I was prepared for some uncertainty from diehard fans but all I’ve received are well-wishes and enthusiasm.  I really appreciate people taking the time to make me feel like one of the family.

So, a bit about me…

My career has had a lot of strange parallels to Vince’s.  We both published our first books in 1997 and both were lucky enough to get positive reactions from thriller fans.  We’re both fascinated with the dark side of politics and both well connected to the intelligence community.  Vince was even nice enough to give me a terrific quote for the jacket of one of my books.

Even Mitch and I share a little history.  If you recall, he joined the CIA in reaction to the love of his life dying in Pan Am 103.  My father was the FBI’s lead man in the investigation of that terrorist attack. In fact, it happened during my college graduation dinner in London where he was stationed at the time.  His assistant came to the restaurant and told him that a plane had gone down in a small Scottish town.  That was the last I saw of him for months.

I regret having only met Vince briefly.  Many years ago, Brad Thor tried to put together a weekend at his place in Utah for the three of us and Brad Meltzer but at the time everyone was having kids and struggling with workload. It’s so easy when you’re young to believe you have all the time in the world.

I’ve published twelve thrillers over my career, spanning a wide variety of subject matters and styles. They started with an FBI agent character who appeared in five novels and then branched out into everything from military-oriented plots, to threats revolving around cutting-edge science, to corporate intrigue.

My goal with The Survivor is to stick very closely to Vince’s style and to try to capture Mitch exactly as he did.  I’m lucky that The Last Man included a lot of clues as to where Mitch’s story would go next.  The hope is to create a book that even lifelong fans will have a hard time differentiating from the rest of the series. Not an easy task, but I’m working hard to get as close as I can.

Right now I’m in the middle of a website update that will add a page dedicated to Vince’s readers but, in the meantime, I’ve had a lot of people ask me which of my books are the most Flynn-like. If you’re interested in getting a feel for my style, I’d suggest picking up The Ares Decision or Fade.

Finally, I always love to hear from readers, so if you want to get in touch, go to the contact page at and shoot me an email. Feel free to ask me questions too, either through my website or this website and I’ll post some of the answers in future editions of this newsletter.

Once again, thanks for all the encouragement.

The Vince Flynn Estate, along with Emily Bestler, Senior VP and Editor-in-Chief of Emily Bestler Books are excited to announce the decision to continue the Mitch Rapp series.

Bestler, who was Vince Flynn's only editor throughout his entire career and whose imprint is a division of Simon & Schuster's Atria Books, signed a three book deal with 47-year-old New York Times bestselling author Kyle Mills.

Mills was first published in 1997 and has penned 13 thrillers, most notably Fade and The Ares Decision.

Mills will complete The Survivor, the book Flynn was writing at the time of his death on June 19, 2013, and then write two additional Mitch Rapp novels. The Survivor is tentatively scheduled to release in the fall of 2015.

"I'm really honored to have been asked to continue the Mitch Rapp series," Mills said, "Vince was a great guy who helped me out in my career and as a diehard Rapp fan, I know how devastated his readers are.  They're big shoes to fill, but I'm looking forward to the challenge of continuing an iconic thriller character."

"Vince and Mitch Rapp are so beloved by readers," Bestler said, "It's wonderful that we've found just the right partner to uphold the legacy of both."

"To Vince's wonderful fans, thank you for your love, support and patience, " Vince's widow, Lysa Flynn said, " Vince was very proud of his team and we are confident that Kyle Mills will be a great addition. God bless and keep the faith!"

Pocket Books will be the paperback publisher of all three books, which will also be available from Simon & Schuster Audio and from Simon & Schuster UK in the UK, Australia, India and New Zealand.

Statement On Vince Flynn's, "The Survivor"
Thursday, July 25, 2013

Dear Readers,

First, let me thank you on behalf of everyone here at Simon & Schuster for all of your wonderful, heart-felt and heartwarming notes of condolence concerning Vince’s death last month. They will all be shared with his family and I know they will be touched.

I also want to keep you fully informed about the status of Vince’s unpublished work as he would most certainly want you to have this information.

The Survivor, Vince Flynn’s planned release this fall, is being postponed indefinitely. Vince had not yet completed the manuscript at the time of his passing last month. The reason it is “postponed indefinitely” as opposed to “canceled” is because it is too soon to know how much of the book was written or if Vince had plans or provisions in place in the event that he could not complete the book. As for Vince’s collaboration with Brian Haig, while it is still available for preorder, for the same reasons above, we ask for your patience concerning its publication.

We will absolutely keep you updated and again, many, many thanks for standing by Vince not only through the best parts of his life but through the hardest.

NEW YORK, JUNE 19, 2013-Vince Flynn, the bestselling author of the Mitch Rapp thriller series died early this morning after a long battle with prostate cancer. He was 47.

The fifth of seven children, Vince Flynn was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, on April 6, 1966. He graduated from the Saint Thomas Academy in 1984, and the University of St. Thomas with a degree in economics in 1988.

After college he went to work for Kraft General Foods where he was an account and sales marketing specialist.

In 1990 Vince Flynn left Kraft to accept an aviation candidate slot with the United States Marine Corps. However, one week before leaving for Officers Candidate School, he was medically disqualified from the Marine Aviation Program, due to several concussions and convulsive seizures he suffered as a child following a car accident.  While trying to obtain a medical waiver for his condition, he started thinking about writing a book, an unusual choice for Flynn since he had been diagnosed with dyslexia in grade school and had struggled with reading and writing all his life.

Having been turned down by the Marine Corps, Flynn returned to the work force and took a job with United Properties, a commercial real estate company in the Twin Cities. During his spare time he worked on an idea he had for a book. After two years with United Properties he decided to devote himself full time to writing: he quit his job, moved to Colorado, and began working full time on what would eventually become his first novel, Term Limits.

While writing Term Limits, Flynn supported himself by bartending at night. After five years and more than sixty rejection letters, he decided to self-publish, which was not as common at that time as it is today.   Term Limits went to number one in the Twin Cities area, and within a week Flynn had an agent and garnered a two-book deal with Emily Bestler of Pocket Books, a Simon & Schuster imprint.

First Published by Pocket Books in 1997, Term Limits was a New York Times bestseller in paperback. Since then, his books became perennial bestsellers in hardcover, paperback, and electronic editions, and since the publication of Protect and Defend in 2007, have regularly been #1 New York Times bestsellers.  Flynn’s novels have been praised for their extensive research and prescient warnings about the rise of Islamic Radical Fundamentalism and terrorism. His books have been read by current and former presidents, foreign heads of state, and intelligence professionals around the world, and are admired for their verisimilitude and imagination: one high-ranking CIA official told his staff, “I want you to read Flynn's books and start thinking about how we can more effectively wage this war on terror.”

Works by Flynn include American Assassin, Kill Shot, Transfer of Power, The Third Option, Separation of Power, Executive Power, Memorial Day, Consent to Kill, Act of Treason, Extreme Measures, Pursuit of Honor, The Last Man and Term Limits (not part of the Mitch Rapp series).  Motion picture rights to Flynn’s character Mitch Rapp have been optioned by CBS Films with the intention of making a character-based, action-thriller movie franchise.

“It has been our distinct honor to publish Vince Flynn for the entire length of his career,” said Carolyn Reidy, President and Chief Executive Officer of Simon & Schuster, Inc.  “As good as Vince was on the page - and he gave millions of readers countless hours of pleasure - he was even more engaging in person.   He had a truly unique ability to make everyone - from those of us at Simon & Schuster who were fortunate to be part of his publication, to booksellers and retailers around the nation, and most of all, his readers, with whom he had a very close relationship - feel as if we were on his team and sharing in his life and his success. Yes, we will miss the Mitch Rapp stories that are classic modern thrillers, but we will miss Vince even more.”

Vince Flynn is survived by his wife Lysa Flynn, and three children.

Vince's Kill Shot eBook Statement
Friday, February 17, 2012

Dear Mitch Rapp Fans,

Thank you so much for your support over the first two weeks of publication. Because of you, Kill Shot will debut at #1 in all four possible categories on the New York Times Bestseller List in their February 26th issue.  On top of that, we set the Simon and Schuster all-time record for most fiction ebooks sold in the first week of publication!

On the topic of the ebook edition, I would like to apologize for some of the confusion that occurred for those of you who read Kill Shot in the digital format.   We thought readers would enjoy being able to read excerpts from all of my backlist, but as it turns out, we've heard otherwise from many of you.

All of this free material is counted as part of the book and has led readers to believe they still have 29% of the book left to read when in fact Kill Shot has just ended.  Managing your expectations is something I take very seriously and I understand your frustration.  If I was on a plane and I thought I was only two thirds of the way through a book and it abruptly ended I would be very disappointed.

We hear you and we will fix this. We are in the process of taking out the free sample chapters and should have this problem rectified shortly.  I appreciate your patience on the matter and I apologize for any disappointment or frustration that it has caused.

Vince's Statement On The Kill Shot Book Tour
Monday, January 09, 2012

Dear Mitch Rapp fans,

I am sorry to announce that I will not be doing a book tour for the launch of Kill Shot.  Post radiation my health has continued to improve, and I am feeling much better, but it is crucial that I conserve my energy and keep my immune system primed for the fight.  I just had a very encouraging check up with my doctors and have started the next Rapp novel, which should be ready for publication this fall.

The novel brings Rapp back to the here and now.  I’m excited to report that it’s off to a raging start.  There’re a lot of bodies, some new bad guys and a couple of misguided, self-serving bureaucrats who are about to find out they’ve screwed with the wrong guy.   We also lose someone in this book who we have grown to know and care about over the years.

I have already signed 2,500 copies of Kill Shot and we will announce in the next newsletter where you can purchase them (view list of retailers offering signed copies of Kill Shot).  I will miss seeing all of you this time around.

Thank you for your support and keep the faith.

A Thank You Note From Vince
Tuesday, November 01, 2011

Dear Rapp Fans and Friends,

Thank you for all of your notes and prayers over the last month.  I am happy to report that four weeks post radiation my energy level has started to rebound and the pain and other side effects have also improved.  Your well wishes and prayers have meant a great deal to me and my family during a tough time.  Thank you for your support and keep the faith.

Support the Mitch Rapp and the Killer Mustaches “Movember” Team
Tuesday, October 25, 2011

Vince’s friend Tom Tracy is captaining a “Movember” team named Mitch Rapp and the Killer Mustaches.

Movember was started by two guys down in Australia to help raise awareness for prostate cancer.  It basically involves growing a mustache for the month of November. Vince will be participating and you can too.

Kill Shot Statement
Thursday, October 04, 2012

Dear Rapp Fans,

As some of you may or may not know, I was diagnosed with stage III metastatic prostate cancer in November of 2010.  My treatments have gone well and the cancer has for the most part remained in my prostate and the right ischium at the base of my pelvis.  Kill Shot was on schedule, and as is my habit, I was planning to lock myself away at my cabin for June and July so I could finish the book.  Unfortunately, the cancer did not cooperate.  In early June the tumor on my prostate spread and got a hold of a nerve bundle.  At the same time the cancer on the ischium began to eat away at the bone, which caused some muscles and tendons that run down the back of my leg to snap off.  The pain that this caused made it nearly impossible to sit still and concentrate, which is a fairly important part of writing a book.

My doctors and I had been discussing radiation since the very beginning, and we made the decision to begin treatment in late July.  By the end of August the pain was beginning to subside.  During this time I was holding out hope that I could refocus on Kill Shot and still get the book out in time for Christmas.  I made it through the first half of my forty treatments with very few side effects, and then around September 1, fatigue began to set in.  Once again I found it extremely difficult to focus on the book for more than an hour or two.  I have never missed a pub date and it pains me to come up short on this one.  I desperately wanted to keep my commitment to my publisher, the trade, and most important, you.  Even though my condition has continued to improve, my doctors have told me I will not be back to full strength until the first of November.  After that, they say I will feel better than I’ve felt in two years.

Rather than hand in a substandard Rapp novel, my agent Sloan Harris, my editor Emily Bestler, and I decided that we would move the pub date of Kill Shot to February 7, 2012.  I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused you, and I promise that I will do my best to make sure the extra few months are worth the wait.  Thank you for your patience, prayers, and goodwill.

Keep the faith!

CBS Films Enlists Edward Zwick To Direct American Assassin
Wednesday, June 08, 2011

CBS Films announced today that Oscar©-winner Edward Zwick (The Last Samurai, Blood Diamond) is attached to direct the film adaptation of American Assassin from a screenplay by Zwick and Oscar©-nominee Marshall Herskovitz.  The film is based on the #1 NY Times best-selling novel by Vince Flynn. Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Transformers, RED) via di Bonaventura Pictures and Nick Wechsler (The Road, We Own The Night) will produce along with Zwick and Herskovitz.

American Assassin tells the story of legendary CIA agent Mitch Rapp. Long before he began hunting terrorists, Rapp was a gifted college scholar/athlete.  Then, tragedy struck and Rapp was recruited into the nation’s most elite covert operations program. After completing training designed to teach the kind of lethal skills necessary to target our most dangerous enemies, here and abroad, he is a man reborn with a mission of retribution.

"The Mitch Rapp novels are as thrilling and entertaining as they are relevant,” said Zwick, “and I am delighted to be given the opportunity to translate them to the screen."

American Assassin is the eleventh entry in the Mitch Rapp series.  The series has sold more than 13 million copies in the United States alone and more than one million in 19 international markets.

“I have no doubt that Edward Zwick will do an incredible job of bringing Mitch Rapp to the big screen,” said Flynn. “Ed is among the smartest and most innovative filmmakers in Hollywood and I am fully confident that he is the right man for this job.”

Senior Vice President of Production Maria Faillace and Creative Executive Ryan Conroy are overseeing the project for CBS Films, which has been developing another Mitch Rapp novel, Consent to Kill.

“We were prepping Consent to Kill when Vince told us he was going to tell Mitch Rapp’s origin story in American Assassin.  From there it was a natural decision to introduce audiences to Mitch Rapp - the man before he became the legend,” recalled CBS Films President and CEO Amy Baer.

CBS Films controls the rights to the entire series as well as any new sequels and spinoffs. CAA represents Edward Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz.  Attorneys Eric Brooks and Carlos Goodman of Bloom Hergott represent Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Nick Wechsler.  Vince Flynn is represented by ICM.

Vince's Cancer Statement
Monday, January 31, 2011

In November, at the end of my last tour, I was diagnosed with Stage III metastatic prostate cancer.  Just a few years ago, this diagnosis would have been a death sentence. Today, specialists are making great strides in the areas of hormone therapy and immune response, and there are several very promising drug trials that are changing the landscape of how prostate cancer is treated.

My treatments are working very well, and my near term prognosis is extremely good. In other words, I have more than a few Rapp novels left in me. My attitude is strong, and I feel better than I have in years. I am blessed to be surrounded by a wonderful wife, family, and great friends who have been extremely supportive. My faith has seen me through the darkest moments, and early on, when the diagnosis was not entirely accurate, things were very dark indeed. I am also blessed that I live in a part of the country that is known for great medical care. I have a wonderful group of doctors who are confident that I can beat this thing. For those of you who have gotten to know me, it will not be a surprise to you that this is a battle I do not plan on losing. As with any cancer, this is serious, but the good news is that I have lots of options for slowing this thing down, and then hopefully killing it.

I am currently working with Brian Haig on our joint novel and have started the next Rapp novel that should be out in October of 2011. Please keep me and my family in your thoughts and prayers, and I will try to keep you posted as things progress.

Keep the Faith,
Vince Flynn
